I could sit here and give you facts. I want to sit here and tell you that worldwide 14 million tons of waste are produced because of fast fashion, but I will not do that.
I will not tell you that your favorite companies, like H&M and Zara, exploit their workers. I will not point out how they hide their actions behind ads and campaigns promoting a greener world.
I will not share how angry I am that large magazine platforms (catering to teenagers) know just how to be politically and socially correct…only when it benefits them. How you’ll read an article on woman’s rights, then flip the page to see an ad for a clothing company that exploits their (mostly female) workers. I will not do that.
I will not tell you that 50 million animals are killed each year for their fur. That sometimes they are even labeled “faux”.
I was at work yesterday, where I have a lot of time to think. And I began to reflect on the work I make, and what my plans are for the future. For lack of a more specific term, I am an artist; I am at art school, and I plan to make art into my career. But, yesterday, as I watched, and continue to watch America crumble into itself, I thought about the importance of producing art that not only makess people think but changes the way they think.
And if you think no one needs art, or no one needs your art, I am here to tell you you are wrong, you are so wrong.
Fashion is where I and many others first found our sense of selves. Fashion is the pinnacle of self expression, it is an accessorized version of who we are and what we believe, Fashion shouldn’t hurt, fashion shouldn’t kill.
Think before you shop
Think before you buy
Think before you make
