Ceci Clark is an artist of many talents. From music to photography and graphic design, Ceci has created a world for us to explore.

Ceci is interviewee number two for Thrifts and Prints Anti Standard series. I find her mix of teenage whimsy and bold designs fits perfectly into what Anti-Standard is all about.

“Expression through art has helped me find a firm standing on the long journey through self-acceptance and confidence.”

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself, where are you from? What got you into art?

A. I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. My full name is Cecilia Ali – Cecilia meaning the Saint of Music; Ali meaning The Great. I was raised expected to be a great artist. This was a good starting point to give me the ambition to explore any and all forms of art I could get my hands on. It also helped that my parents supported me in all my wild adventures through exploring all types of mediums. I am currently in a loving long-term relationship with photography, painting, music, digital art, etc. Let’s hope I can continue to expand this list!

Q. What are your biggest sources of inspiration?

A. I find inspiration everywhere! I would say the main places I pull from are my social media platforms and antique/thrift shops. I also read lots of types of books and zines by artists. This helps me broaden my taste and style. I also enjoy travel and am lucky enough to do it frequently. This allows me to be able to step out of my comfort zone and explore different cultures, scenes, and art forms everywhere I go. I always do my best to keep an eye out for any kind of inspiration.

Q. As an artist, what do you think is one of the most important qualities to have?

I think one of the most important lessons I’ve learned through my growth as an artist is that having an open mind and keeping a calm demeanor is a necessity to thrive. Without these qualities, one cannot expect anything exceptional to come out of their work.

Q. If you weren’t an artist, what do you think you’d be doing?

If I had chosen a life outside of art and music, I think I would be completely clueless as to who I really am.  I would be majoring in something I wouldn’t care about in a small boring town probably settling for some boy not good enough for me. Expression through art has helped me find a firm standing on the long journey through self-acceptance and confidence.

Q. What excites you the most about art?

A. The relief one feels after you finish a piece. I mainly use art as a way to cope with a stressful situation going on in my life. I always end up feeling so much better after writing a song or going on a photoshoot. My art truly is the best way for me to gain perspective and find peace within myself.

Q. What are your future goals as an artist?

To make work that matters. I don’t want to be mediocre or make art just for the sake of creating. I strive to make smart work as well as art that contributes to society. I am currently working on my second album. I do my best to go on a shoot a day to always work on growing and expanding. I also hope not to starve; wish me luck!
